Welcome to Pickwick Pugs located in Alabama, USA, dedicated to the pug breed since 1990. Members of the Pug Dog Club of America the American Kennel Club's Bred with H.E.A.R.T. program, Birmingham Obedience Training Club, and the Greater Atlanta Pug Club, we are a small (2 people) hobby/show kennel located outside of Birmingham, Alabama.
The McLellands are full-time musicians and their involvement with pugs and dogs is a hobby and passion. The costs of showing, training, travel, and health-testing their pugs is worth the investment to them, however, as they treasure the pug breed and believe strongly in doing everything possible to keep this breed healthy, thriving, and vibrant. As a member of the AKC Bred with H.E.A.R.T. program, Pickwick Pugs is committed to improving the health and well-being of purebred pugs. Pickwick Pugs believes that overall health, sound temperament, and sociability are just as important as outward looks when meeting breed standard. All of the canine crew at Pickwick Pugs -- rescues and show pugs alike -- live with the McLelland in their home, so they are able to truly evaluate temperament and sociability. Pugs should be jolly, bright, inquisitive, and anxious to please, learn, and love.

Membership in the AKC Bred with H.E.A.R.T. program involves:
- HEALTH: Pickwick Pugs must certify that our breeding stock is health tested in accordance with the recommendations of the National Pug Dog Club of America. The Pug Dog Club of America recommends all dogs used for breeding and exhibition be screened for health issues. To that end, the Pug Dog Club of America recommends the following tests:
- Hip Dysplasia - OFA Evaluation
- Patellar Luxation - OFA Evaluation
- OFA or CERF Eye Examination - annually by a boarded ACVO Ophthalmologist
- Pug Dog Encephalitis (PDE) - DNA test for Necrotizing Meningoencephalitis
- Elbow Dysplasia (Optional) - OFA Evaluation
- Pyruvate Kinase Deficiency (PKD) (Optional) - DNA based PKD test results from an approved lab
- Serum Bile Acid Test (Optional) - PDCA recommends Bile Acid testing for puppies. Typically a 1-2 hour post-prandial Bile Acid is run at 9-10 weeks of age. If it is elevated, then a repeat test is performed using both fasting and post-prandial samples.
- EDUCATION: Pickwick pugs promises to pursue AKC provided or AKC approved continuing breeder education so that we stay educated on the best breeding practices, including advances in canine health.
- ACCOUNTABILITY: Pickwick Pugs agrees to comply with the AKC Care and Conditions Policy, including inspections by the AKC, and promises to share with AKC health testing and continuing education documentation.
- RESPONSIBILITY: Pickwick Pugs accepts responsibility for the health and well-being of the puppies we produce and for complying with all laws regarding the ownership and maintenance of dogs.
- TRADITION: Pickwick Pugs upholds the AKC’s tradition of breeding purebred dogs that are happy and healthy.
Once you have been owned by a pug, it becomes quite obvious why they are one of the oldest breeds of dogs and have flourished since before 400 B.C. Our goal at Pickwick Pugs is to keep this breed flourishing. To that end, we fully support and promote PDE susceptibility testing and other important health scheme testing of our pugs to be bred. We test for:
It is important to note that buying from a reputable, conscientious breeder does not guarantee perfect health for life. Therefore, it is important to research all of the challenges you may face when owning a pug. In general, the pug breed often deals with hip dysplasia, elongated soft palates, PDE, PK, other eye problems, and other issues. A good starting source is the Pug Dog Club of America. You might also speak with a vet who has dealt with pugs to learn what you might possibly expect throughout a pug’s lifetime. While pugs' challenges often involve eyes and hips, ALL breeds and all living creatures will have their own, unique challenges as well as those universal challenges such as bacteria, viruses, accidents, and just the exciting act of staying alive while living a full and fulfilled life.
Through our participation in conformation dog shows, highly qualified AKC judges have selected Pickwick pugs to be some of the best representatives of the breed. The AKC Champion and Grand Champion pugs we include in our breeding program have received recognition with awards such as "Best of Breed", "Best of Winners", "Best of Opposite Sex", "Winners Bitch", "Winners Dog", "Best in Toy Group", "Best Puppy", "Best of Breed Owner Handler" and more.
Along with our extensive health-testing and screening, and consultation with top trainers, behaviorists, and some of the most important pug breeders in the US and the world, we are confident that we have done all we can do toward our goal of producing amazing pugs who are beautiful inside and out! With our pugs' participation in performance sports, we are also able to observe each dog's learning curve and intelligence quotient. Pickwick pugs are intelligent!
Pickwick's Child, That Hemline's Out of Sight (Miss Dior, born July, 2018), at 8 months, rocking the ring at her 2nd show cluster. Just like her mother, Champion Peachtree's Kirkcudbright Kayleigh, CGC, RN (KK), she knows how to look at the judge to show off her winning face!
Here is Champion Pickwick's Peachtree Hill Country Mighty Macintosh (born June, 2017) at his 1st puppy match. He went onto finish his AKC championship before he was even 9 months old! Then, he earned 2 qualifying scores for AKC Trick Dog, and is now starting his work on Rally Obedience and Canine Freestyle!
Pickwick's AKC Breeder-Owner Champion Medallion, awarded in 2018. These medallions are awarded to those exhibitors that complete all points required for their conformation championship title by advancing to the winners competition from the Bred-by -Exhibitor class.
Our beautiful foundation bitch, Champion Peachtree's Kirkcudbright Kayleigh, CGC, RN (KK), who, with the encouragement of her wonderful breeder, Vallarie Smith Cuttie, introduced us to the world of conformation.
Training and Health
Beauty and brains is our motto! Our pugs hold AKC titles in Rally Obedience, Trick Dog, Canine Good Citizenship, and some have earned their Achiever Dog Award. Many have also trained in Canine Freestyle, and other endeavors and, of course, they all excel at lap-sitting and loving!
Pugs are intelligent, "loving, charming, mischievous" cuddle partners, and our pugs love learning new tricks like playing the piano, painting, and other cute tricks like bow, wave, crawl, and shake as well as important obedience commands like come, sit, stay, snore. But, painting seems to be their favorite … show pugs and rescues alike … as they sell their paintings and original paw-painted creations to raise money for canine rescue! www.ThePaintingPugs.com
Rally O, Freestyle, Tricks
All of our "pug children" over the years have excelled at couch-sitting, loving, and eating, and our current pugs also excel at Rally Obedience, playing the piano, canine freestyle, painting (their artwork raises money for rescue!), and conformation. To learn more about our training philosophy check out this blog post.
