We do not breed often but, when we do, we carefully evaluate and select puppies that will contribute to the future of our breeding program and the future of this marvelous breed.

We do not accept deposits. Our procedure is:
  • Gather information of prospective homes to keep on file.
  • When a pup or puppies become available Pickwick Pugs begins the process of contacting prospective owners who have shown an interest in a puppy and completed the inquiry form to see if they are still looking for a puppy.
  • At that point, further dialogue is pursued, Skype or Facetime (or in person) meetings are scheduled, references are contacted and prospective puppy owners can share even more about what they are looking for in a puppy.
  • Based upon the results from an individual puppy's temperament test and other evaluations, and the information gathered through the inquiry form and further conversations, the best choice of puppy (or puppies when available) is offered to each prospective buyer.
  • Prospective puppy buyers are encouraged to schedule an in-person visit if they desire and distance is not a factor so that they can meet their puppy (or give input to their choice of puppy when possible).
  • When matching a prospective owner with a puppy who will be the best fit, there are many factors involved. For example, a puppy who will be living in a large city negotiating loud public transit, or living with a family with young children, will need to have passed the sound sensitivity test with flying colors. There are some puppies who would thrive in a home as an "only child" and others who would thrive as a performance pup, doing agility or rally or other activities. While all Pickwick pugs are bred to be companion dogs, they will each have unique strengths which will compliment the unique lifestyles of their future forever home owner(s).
  • During the remaining weeks, the puppy will focus on specific skills during training sessions specifically with its new prospective home environment in mind. Custom tailored training sessions for each puppy. When possible, the puppy's new call name, chosen by prospective owner, will be introduced and used during training. (Some prospective puppy buyers would prefer to wait and name the puppy. Some might prefer to continue using our "temporary" call name we give each puppy. If changing names, it is helpful to choose a name which has the same opening consonant sound but these puppies are smart and will easily be able to change names with some fun "name recognition" clicker training games.)
  • At 12 weeks, the puppy is ready to go to his or her new home! All new puppy owners are required to pick the puppy up in person. We do not ship. As a Pickwick puppy owner, you become a part of our family and it's important that meet as many of the future family members as possible! This is also a good opportunity to go over training protocols which you will want to continue, meet the puppy's mother (and possibly father if he lives with us), meet the puppy's siblings or cousins, and enjoy a wonderful time bonding during the trip home.
  • Payment in full must be completed online (via PayPal) approximately day 77-79, (5 business days prior to pickup day around day 84), prior to bringing the puppy home. We do not accept deposits or early payments "to hold a puppy". Each puppy's home is chosen based upon multiple factors determined during interviews and conversations after the puppy is around 8 weeks old. While prospective owners are chosen at approximately this time so that the remaining weeks (9-12) may involve individual training sessions designed specifically for each new home, we wait until closer to "Gotcha Day" for payment due to many factors. Because of this, we lineup a handful of prospective owners for a specific litter or puppy who know they are "backups" for current litter, but will be offered the option to be first on the waiting list for the next litter.

Why are Pickwick Pugs Exceptional?
Pickwick Pugs are exceptional representations of the breed, health-tested, healthy, AKC registered champions, holding titles in not just conformation (having won things like "Best of Breed" and "Best of Winners and "Best in Show") but also things like rally obedience, tricks, canine freestyle, and canine good citizenship. Temperament, personality, biddability and, yes, intelligence, are all important factors to us when selecting who we will breed …. not just looks and physical structure.

But that's just a starting place. Beyond this . . .

When the puppies are 7.5-8 weeks of age, we hire a certified trainer to complete the AviDog temperament evaluations of each puppy. This helps us determine the best fit for each prospective puppy owner.

We train and socialize our puppies.
Puppies go to their new homes having trained daily on such important skills as sit, down, stand, wait, attention ("watch me"), leave it, drop it, take it, gentle (soft bite), touch (nose to hand target or target stick), paw (touch object with paw; paint), and have begun training in loose-leash walking, crate and house-training (which will continue with their new owners as their bladder matures), and fun tricks like shake, hi-5, spin, bow. The puppy will have spent 100's of hours of training working on the protocols of Jane Killion's Puppy Culture, with daily, individual attention beginning day 1, all the way through day 84 and "gotcha day". Each puppy will have been socialized, having met all sorts of people and experienced all sorts of novel things and new environments. They will be used to traveling in cars (in a secure crate), and have visited all sorts of places like Home Depot, banks, or restaurants.

The Puppy Culture protocols actually begin while the puppy is still in the womb. We start handling/socializing the puppies from the day he/she is born and apply bio-sensor principles and ENS (Early Neurological Stimulation) exercises from their 1st day of life until they leave to go to their new home. We want our puppies to have every advantage as they leave our home and go to their "Forever homes". Starting on Day 3, we add ENS exersies through Day 16. To read more about the benefits observed in canines that were exposed to the Bio Sensor stimulation exercises check out our blog post.  By 12 weeks of age, when the puppies go to their new homes, they have worked on important skills and have developed an important part of their brain resulting from positive reinforcement and "clicker training". Each new puppy owner will be provided with links to training videos and tips for continued training as well.

Champions and Important Pedigrees
Pickwick Pugs only sells AKC registered pugs from AKC Champion bloodlines and health-tested parents. We do not breed pugs who have not completed recommended health tests.  Some of the parents, siblings, cousins, grandparents of Pickwick Pug puppies have been the pugs you see on TV at Westminster dog show. Our beautiful Thrill Litter girls' sire is from the famous Mianda Kennel, again with Westminster Dogs and #1 stud dog in the US, or the famous Tangetoppen line in Norway with champions all over the world, not just the United States, including Best of Breed at Crufts, and multiple World Dog Show winners.
