Preserving the Pug Breed's
Future. Health. Heart. Heritage. AKC Breeder of Merit Tucked just outside Birmingham, Alabama, Pickwick Pugs is home to Jeff, Amy, and a lively little grumble of pugs—champions, characters, and a few beloved rescue All-Americans.
We’re devoted to this ancient and extraordinary breed, and we feel incredibly lucky to share our lives with them. As preservation breeders, our focus is simple: to raise pugs who are healthy, joyful, and true to the Breed Standard —inside and out.

Our pugs come from carefully selected lines in the U.S. and abroad, with a strong emphasis on health, temperament, and longevity. But just as important as pedigree is how our puppies are raised—right here in our home, with intention, structure, and a whole lot of love. Companion pugs are placed on a spay/neuter agreement at the appropriate time.
Every Pickwick puppy is AKC registered, microchipped, vaccinated for age, and examined by licensed veterinarians multiple times. We are members of The Pug Dog Club of America, AKC Breeders of Merit and follow rigorous health testing protocols.
Health TESTING
Health is at the core of everything we do. Each pug in our breeding program must complete all health tests recommended by the Pug Dog Club of America — and several additional evaluations. No matter how beautiful or titled a dog may be, we never breed any pug who does not pass these tests to our high standards. Superior health and sound temperament come first, always. We offer a health guarantee and complete important genetic health screening including:
Pickwick pugs grow up learning how to be confident, curious, and kind. We raise each puppy using Puppy Culture protocols with extensive training and socialization. In fact, each puppy leaves at 12 weeks having mastered all the skills for an AKC Novice Tricks Title!
Puppy training
Pickwick puppies are raised in our home and enjoy being exposed to family life, car rides, outings, gentle challenges, new environments, and a wide variety of people. They are litter-box trained early, begin outdoor potty training at the appropriate age, learn crate manners, and enjoy a full curriculum of fun games, puzzles, enrichment, and confidence-building adventures. They even paint their own “graduation canvas” as part of their training!
Pickwick Pug puppies are very often the "star students" of their Puppy Kindergarten classes. We strive for intelligent pugs with personality but who are also lovers and kind in spirit. Beautiful, healthy, loving, and smart are our goals.
Moose from Stars Litter
Each puppy receives daily positive-reinforcement training, clicker lessons, life-skills practice, and even earns an AKC Novice Trick Dog title before going home!
To qualify for this title, puppies must demonstrate successful mastery of such skills as sit, down, spin, hand touch, shake, hi-5, tunnel, get in, get on, paws up, balance beam, jump through hoop, and hand touch. Each puppy even performs a unique trick such as play the piano, ride in a toy car, or run in a wheel. We train using positive reinforcement and clicker training techniques which we have learned over the years through our studies with such legends as Ian Dunbar, Karen Pryor, Victoria Stillwell and other amazing behaviorists, vets, and trainers. Both Jeff and Amy trained our AKC Achiever pug, Sebastian BGR, TKN, TKI, CGC, RN, RA.
Temperament: At 7.5 weeks, puppies complete the Avid Dog Temperament Evaluations conducted by a guest professional. For the first decade of our program an exceptional trainer/behaviorist (who also bred Golden Retrievers to be service dogs, and friend/colleague of Victoria Stillwell), guided us and helped us improve the temperament in our Pickwick lines tremendously. "Gorgeous puppy, but aloof? Out of the breeding program." These evaluations are invaluable in helping us match each puppy to the perfect home.
In keeping with our "Painting Pugcasso" fundraising, the puppies we breed even create a paw-painted masterpiece prior to "gotcha day", which is included in their go-home bags/basket and create a group litter painting which is sold to raise money for Animal Rescue. While we’re proud of our accomplishments in the show ring, what matters most to us is the life each pug goes on to live—whether that’s in the ring, on a therapy visit, on a hiking trail, or curled up on the couch with their people.
This isn’t just something we do—it’s a lifelong commitment to the breed and to every family who becomes part of the Pickwick story. We’re always here for our families, and our door is always open—no matter the reason, at any stage of life. If plans ever change, we simply ask that your pug finds their way back home to us. We invite you to explore, meet our pugs, and learn more about our program. Jeff & Amy Alabama, USA |
