Umberto as a puppy in Serbia with his wonderful breeder, Aleksandra . . .

Umberto travels from Serbia to USA!
We were SO excited to meet Umberto at the Atlanta airport. He flew from Serbia with a stop in Istanbul, then a LONG flight to US. Here is Umberto with his breeder and sister EARLY in the morning at the airport in Belgrade. The start of his long journey!
It's nice that one of Umberto's of his littermates also traveled with him as she kept him company making everything not quite as scary. She is now living in a show home in South Carolina so perhaps we will meet up at some future show!
Jeff was the first to hold Umberto at the airport and it was an instant bond!
By now it was really late -- we didn't get home until after 1 AM -- but Umberto was definitely happy to be out of that travel bag! Here he is with jeff at the airport parking garage.
The first few nights, we setup a makeshift bedroom downstairs in Amy's piano studio with an air mattress (for Amy ;) and X-pen and dog bed for Umberto. This way he wasn't alone and had some company. A few nights later we chose Mr. Drysdale to be Umberto's quarantine pal and they just love each other now. Mr. Drysdale doesn't have a mean bone in his body so we knew he would be the safest bet.
His first meal (aside from the beef treats we brought to airport) was an assortment of foods. The flight nanny was not allowed to carry the food the breeder had prepared but fortunately he had been fed raw meat in addition to his good kibble, so the transition has not been an issue at all. The pawTree probiotics are also amazing to help with the change of diet. The pig ear and duck foot was fresh as we dehydrated them ourselves.

Amy kept sleeping downstairs with them until it was time to start introducing Umberto to the pack. We started with the older, more trustworthy (and always just one or 2 at a time). Everyone loved him. It's hard not to love Umberto -- humans or dogs, all love him because he is just so appropriately behaved with such a balanced temperament.
We took Umberto to our vet the next day and he was deemed healthy -- fecal was clear -- and everyone fell instantly in love with him. We also registered him with AKC but that process will take awhile ... the form states "please allow up to 4 weeks for processing". AKC is so slow, but they don't have that many employees really and they oversee so many registrations. Socialization will be our biggest task to start with. After a bit of quarantine time, we have now started taking him places -- first stop, the church on Sunday so he could meet choir members. Jeff sat on the floor and Umberto crawled in his lap and studied everyone. Occasionally he would walk over and sniff someone and say hello, then return back to Jeff's safe lap. It was a lot to take in but a safe crowd.
His ears had just started to "fly" the night before so we waited until after his visit to church to tape them. The next trip was to Oak Mountain Brewery where he got to meet some more people and get used to car noises and such.
We will start taking him to handling class next week but keep working with him stacking on the table and gaiting. But, foremost goal = socializing! His very first show was in Batesville, MS and Jeff showed him. It was pretty daunting for him but by the 3rd day he was starting to gain more confidence. His 2nd show was in Salem and Charlotte Patterson judged him the first day of rhe cluster. He had gained so much confidence and was almost strutting around the ring by the last day of the cluster ... so much so that Charlotte said "is this the same dog?" and she remarked on his amazing transformation. Umberto is a fast learner and his core is as sweet and amazing of any pug we have ever owned. He is an observer and a thoughtful pug, so he "takes it all in". Here he is in the hotel room with Cindy and Lola and Iona, a bit outnumbered but still loving it all!
Umberto had so much fun at his first camping trip.
Alas, he did experience an insect bite which required a trip to a local vet, but he recovered quickly and was able to walk at the show easily.

Here is Umberto, Cindy, and Lola at the McDonald, TN show enjoying watching the Golden Retrievers. (You can tell they were all quite threatened lolz.)

Umberto had fun at his 2nd trip to Tennessee for the Mountain Cluster in Knoxville. He had some tough competition this time but managed to steal 2 days of Winners Dog and Best of Winners! He had a blast in the hotel stay (yes, due to the hurricane, we opted for brick and mortar this time over a tent lol) being the only boy as Iona, Cindy, and Lola also joined us on the adventure. He is the sweetest pug on earth and is getting so happy with the show world, gaining confidence each outing. His favorite treat, in case you are wondering, is cheese! But he also loved the sirloin steak ;) and (very stinky) buffalo ear we got the show. We love this boy so much! Mr. Drysdale and even Parker were so happy to see him once we got home after being gone an entire week. Here are a few photos and videos of his Knoxville, TN adventure which began with a visit to The Great Smoky Mountain and his first mountain stream.

Behaving like a seasoned professional in Knoxville. He even stared a hole through the judge's face each day! Such a charmer . . .

Here is Umberto showing off his WD and BW ribbons in front of the hotel . . .
Just another Saturday night .... it's Umberto's turn to watch TV on Jeff's lap! (November, 2024)
Umberto the wolf lol! (at the Perry, GA dog show);
Umberto is loving the shows lately. He beat Cindy for Best of Winners Thursday and Friday at the Columbiana shows. Here he is (midway through video) being his happy self. Umberto also won Best of Breed Owner-Handled. Thank you Judge Constantine-Amodei for our wins. Cindy won Winners Dog and Best of Opposite Sex and Lola won Reserve Winners Bitch both days and Best Bred by Exhibitor Friday.
Umberto has been picking up lots of points at several dog shows. He has won Winners Dog, Best of Winners, Best of Opposite Sex, Reserve Winners Dog and lots of hearts at shows in Clemson, South Carolina, Columbiana, Alabama, Perry, Georgia, and here he is enjoying a visit to the beach in Florida after winning Winners Dog every day in the Tallahassee, Florida cluster.
Some more tent camping fun for Umberto, Cindy, and Lola at the huge April cluster in Perry, Georgia. The Lil' Buddy  heater kept us all warm and the days were absolutely amazing weather-wise.
We were in the ring with all these important pro-handlers who were showing class dogs as well as specials. It was super tough competition and, alas, the major was even broken except for one day. Umberto did such a fabulous job, though, and held his own in the ring against these superbly shown dogs. (As I've often said, my pugs have to win in spite of us ... as we are pretty horrible handlers. But, we have fun and try to always make it an amazing experience for our pugs.) Umberto picked up some more points toward his championship with one win (yes, he beat the pro-handler one day! wahoo!) and lots more purple with his reserve winners dog wins. (A few of these ribbons are Cindy's and Lola's) . . .
Picture
Cooking treats for the next day's shows! Yummy liver. Umberto also enjoyed a bunch of special treats we bought at the show, like Cod and some super healthy freeze-dried treats.

What Our Clients Are Saying

Bumi was star student at his puppy class today and has been pretty much bomb-proof in the world so far. You definitely set him up for success!"

"You do such a good job training/preparing them. Rosalina is the best trained dog in this house...everyone at work is always blown away how incredible she is ... Socialization, confidence, obedience ... And, well, she’s really pretty." (Vet Tech, mom, loving pug owner)

"The vet was impressed that his nostrils were completely open."

"So many people at the festival were asking where did you get such a beautiful pug from and we said from an amazing breeder in Alabama, Pickwick Pugs"

"He [Louie, out of the Beatrix Potter litter] is by far the most athletic & strongest of any other pugs we’ve had. He’s 18.5 lbs of muscle! I’m sure there are genetics involved, but we also followed your advice with the diet, fish oil, supplements etc. If we had the time, I bet he’d be a champion at agility. We love everything about him!!"
