Umberto's Blog
Umberto travels from Serbia to USA!
We were SO excited to meet Umberto at the Atlanta airport. He flew from Serbia with a stop in Istanbul, then a LONG flight to US. Here is Umberto with his breeder and sister EARLY in the morning at the airport in Belgrade. The start of his long journey!
It's nice that one of Umberto's of his littermates also traveled with him as she kept him company making everything not quite as scary. She is now living in a show home in South Carolina so perhaps we will meet up at some future show!
Jeff was the first to hold Umberto at the airport and it was an instant bond!
By now it was really late -- we didn't get home until after 1 AM -- but Umberto was definitely happy to be out of that travel bag! Here he is with jeff at the airport parking garage.
The first few nights, we setup a makeshift bedroom downstairs in Amy's piano studio with an air mattress (for Amy ;) and X-pen and dog bed for Umberto. This way he wasn't alone and had some company. A few nights later we chose Mr. Drysdale to be Umberto's quarantine pal and they just love each other now. Mr. Drysdale doesn't have a mean bone in his body so we knew he would be the safest bet.
His first meal (aside from the beef treats we brought to airport) was an assortment of foods. The flight nanny was not allowed to carry the food the breeder had prepared but fortunately he had been fed raw meat in addition to his good kibble, so the transition has not been an issue at all. The pawTree probiotics are also amazing to help with the change of diet. The pig ear and duck foot was fresh as we dehydrated them ourselves.
Amy kept sleeping downstairs with them until it was time to start introducing Umberto to the pack. We started with the older, more trustworthy (and always just one or 2 at a time). Everyone loved him. It's hard not to love Umberto -- humans or dogs, all love him because he is just so appropriately behaved with such a balanced temperament.
We took Umberto to our vet the next day and he was deemed healthy -- fecal was clear -- and everyone fell instantly in love with him. We also registered him with AKC but that process will take awhile ... the form states "please allow up to 4 weeks for processing". AKC is so slow, but they don't have that many employees really and they oversee so many registrations. Socialization will be our biggest task to start with. After a bit of quarantine time, we have now started taking him places -- first stop, the church on Sunday so he could meet choir members. Jeff sat on the floor and Umberto crawled in his lap and studied everyone. Occasionally he would walk over and sniff someone and say hello, then return back to Jeff's safe lap. It was a lot to take in but a safe crowd.
His ears had just started to "fly" the night before so we waited until after his visit to church to tape them. The next trip was to Oak Mountain Brewery where he got to meet some more people and get used to car noises and such.
We will start taking him to handling class next week but keep working with him stacking on the table and gaiting. But, foremost goal = socializing!
Umberto had so much fun at his first camping trip.

Alas, he did experience an insect bite which required a trip to a local vet, but he recovered quickly and was able to walk at the show easily.
Here is Umberto, Cindy, and Lola at the McDonald, TN show enjoying watching the Golden Retrievers. (You can tell they were all quite threatened lolz.)
Umberto had fun at his 2nd trip to Tennessee for the Mountain Cluster in Knoxville. He had some tough competition this time but managed to steal 2 days of Winners Dog and Best of Winners! He had a blast in the hotel stay (yes, due to the hurricane, we opted for brick and mortar this time over a tent lol) being the only boy as Iona, Cindy, and Lola also joined us on the adventure. He is the sweetest pug on earth and is getting so happy with the show world, gaining confidence each outing. His favorite treat, in case you are wondering, is cheese! But he also loved the sirloin steak ;) and (very stinky) buffalo ear we got the show. We love this boy so much! Mr. Drysdale and even Parker were so happy to see him once we got home after being gone an entire week. Here are a few photos and videos of his Knoxville, TN adventure which began with a visit to The Great Smoky Mountain and his first mountain stream.
Showing off his new bowtie collar, Overlook Gatlinburg, TN ...
Behaving like a seasoned professional in Knoxville. He even stared a hole through the judge's face each day! Such a charmer . . .
Here is Umberto showing off his WD and BW ribbons in front of the hotel . . .
Umberto enjoyed being entertained by 4-month-old puppies Cindy and Lola with their hotel zoomies . . .
More hotel shenanigans . . .
Just another Saturday night .... it's Umberto's turn to watch TV on Jeff's lap! (November, 2024)
