Emma
(Pickwick's Judge of Your Own Happiness) AKC# TS60090801 Emma stayed with us at Pickwick Pugs. She is growing into the most amazing pug, level topline, mink like plush clear and light coat, and such a gorgeous face and underjaw. We are excited about her future. She also has become the new Rally Obedience protege as she is a genius and has amazing attention and focus. Here she is at 4 months her very first time in the show ring at the Pug Dog Club of America nationals. Because of money, we focused on showing Eliza, but Emma is an amazing pug and championship worthy.

Eliza
(CH Pickwick's Too Generous to Trifle With) AKC# TS6009802 Eliza stayed with us at Pickwick Pugs. She finished her championship out of the Bred By Class while still a puppy, after starting her show career with a Best of Opposite Sex in the 4-6 class at The Pug Dog Club of America National Specialty. She is brilliant like her sister Emma and has an adorable "chirp" when she is excited. She and Emma both love the exercise wheel!

Penelope
(new name Penny) (Pickwick's Laugh Me Out of My Opinion) AKC# TS9560090804 Penny lives with a fabulous family in Georgia. She completed the Puppy K class with Peach on a Leash and we were so impressed with what she learned. Our favorite video is of her riding in the electric toy car with her human sisters. She is so well loved!

Darcy
(new name Ozzie) (Pickwick's How Ardently I Admire and Love You) AKC# TS60090805 Beautiful Darcy was the pick of the litter. He now lives in Indianna with 2 amazing human parents. He doesn't live that far from the Pet Store where we buy a lot of the raw meat we feed our crew! www.mypetcarnivore.com They are lucky to save $ on the shipping!

SireAKC Grand Champion
GCH Mianda's Mac Daddy Mac Daddy is beautifully line bred. Lilly's sire is GCH Mianda's Prince Charming at Vanity, so it will be nice to tap back into the plush coat, bone, and beauty of Mianda.
Mac is a good honest dog, nice and square. He has wonderful shoulder and balanced angles. A good topline and tailset. He has a super sweet disposition. He is also completely health tested (including spine):
The main linebreed on the litter is Hoss at 6.3%. To get a strong linebreed on a paticular dog in a pedigree you want to get at least 5% so there is a strong possibility that the pups could favor Hoss' look. Here is CH MacDaddy's sire, CH Handacole Mianda's Lil' Hoss . . .
Here is a recent photo of Hoss who is now retired. Look how amazing he looks, especially for a senior!
Here are some more pugs in MacDaddy's pedigree . . . .
Mac Daddy's paternal grandsire, Moonstruck Mianda's What in Blue Blazes . . . .
Paternal great-grandsire, Kendoric's Riversong Mulroney (Call name Dermot) (CH, 3 BOB in Westminster, AM Champion, 65 BIS). He held the record for the most Best in Shows of any pug in history until Biggie (GCH Hill Country's Puttin on the Ritz) took the title. Our Stella (Pickwick's Watching the Stars Align) and our Robert, (GCH Hill Country's I'll Bee Your Shining Star) at Pickwick Pugs are half siblings to Biggie.

Since the sire lives in Canada, this endeavor will involve Fedex, our vet, progesterone testing, and some incredible timing. Inhale. Exhale. In the meantime, Lilly is eating well and exercising.
March 11: While Amy was running the Birmingham Music Teachers Association citywide Sonata competition, hubby called to say "Lilly's heat has started". Wahoo! We contacted MacDaddy's owner, and will be setting up some appointments at the vet soon for progesterone testing so that we can time this show as successfully as possible. So exciting!
Monday, 3/20/23, Lilly visited Dr. Williams at the vet and they took some blood from her leg (Lilly didn't like that and she cussed using her eyes at the vet tech Jana. I told Lilly to be more respectful and she sighed.) The vet phoned later to say her progesterone was still low at .02 so we scheduled an appointment for Wednesday.
Wednesday, 3/22/23, Dr Williams drew some more blood and ran another progesterone test. This time, .2 ... so we came back Friday.
Friday, 3/24/23, progesterone this time was 1.9 so starting to climb. We gave Dr. Williams Lilly's painting she painted in Florida ... it was only fitting after all she has done for us!

Sunday, 3/26/23, Lilly was flirting BIG TIME with Parker who was on the other side of the baby gate. So, we figured she was ovulating ... ofcourse, it was Sunday, and vet was closed. Pugs have the worst timing.
Monday, 3/27/23 MORNING we went to vet for progesterone test and it was 10.9. Wow, we let Leanna Motus, the breeder at Xoe pugs in Canada so she could collect and overnight ship chilled semen to us. We will cross fingers that the semen arrives by tomorrow, Tuesday, 3/28/23, so that we can do the AI. Then we will cross fingers and pray that the breeding takes. It's going to be close since progesterone is so high now .... If it weren't for Sundays, we would never have these timing issues ;) Sigh.
More soon! In the meantime, here is another photo of the handsome boy we are hoping to be the sire, plus some photos of the beautiful newborn puppies MacDaddy just produced .... they are in Canada and it is such a consistent litter.

Tuesday, April 25, 2023, Jeff took Lilly to Hope Animal Clinic for an ultrasound to confirm pregnancy. She's pregnant! Two heart beats were confirmed but there could be the possibility of a 3rd pup 'hiding'. We called our main vet right away to setup some dates such as X-ray and C-section!
If on track, the embryo took shape with the eyelids taking on a distinct shape this past Wednesday, April 26th, (Day 32). the embryo took shape with the eyelids taking on a distinct shape and today (Saturday, April 29th), the toes should become visible! We will begin to add more food to meet increase in appetite, still being careful not to overfeed. As of late, she is enjoying baked chicken and Beaver with, of course, added supplements and Honest Kitchen. She is definitely becoming more finicky!Day 35: Toes become visible. Provide more food to meet increase in appetite, but do not overfeed.

Monday, 5/22/23 - Lilly's x-rays at our vet showed 5 puppies! Wow. Of course, there are still lots of bridges to cross but we are so excited and hopeful. (5 big pups!)
Tuesday, 5/23/23 -Our amazing vet tech took blood for a progesterone test. Holding at 8. ? now we will retest again Thursday morning at 8 AM. It's getting close but we won't look at a c-section until progesterone is 2 or under. She is starting to want to 'hide' more which is an early sign of nesting. Temp 5/24 AM was 99.1, so dropping. Here she is "hiding" under our comforter . . .
Thursday, 5/25/23 AM - Jeff took Lilly to the vet again at 8 AM for another progesterone test. 5.9, so we will retest again tomorrow at 8 AM. Getting close! Since she will ONLY eat things like organ meat, gizzards (silly Lilly) and not even the baked chicken, tongue, and other extremely fancy things we try (don't even think about kibble or such lolz) vet said to add some more probiotics throughout the day. She is a trooper and doing well and sweeter than ever. We love this girl SO much.
Friday, 5/26/23 Progesterone test was 3.9. We decided to just stick with the scheduled Saturday c-section appointment HOWEVER we knew it was going to be close and quite possible that Lilly went into labor Friday in the middle of the night. It was a rough night for certain and Amy had to stay awake all night watching Lilly closely "in case" (pugs typically need help breaking open the sack, helping the mama clean and sucking fluids out of airways etc.) Lilly made it through the night, though. Here she is the night before . . . .
Saturday, 5/27/23 - Puppies delivered via c-section by Dr. Allen Borden. The surgery was originally scheduled for noon but they moved us up (thank you to the people willing to wait as they shifted the schedule around a bit!). Everything was packed and ready to go (emergency suitcase if a trip to er vet was necessary; puppy sherpa bag with heating pad for pups; crate in car with fresh linens for Lilly etc. etc.). But we were delayed despite all this. Sigh. First, we couldn't find my (Amy's) keys (and we had to take Amy's car because Jeff had to work Saturday am). Guess what? Finally found the keys. They were in the ignition so battery was drained. Double sigh. Yep, forgot I was going to head back out for a 2nd errand and got side tracked. Soooooo ..... Jeff took Amy and Lilly to vet, and then (wow people are nice) our awesome vet tech let Amy borrow her car to get home. (We just live 2 blocks from our vet). So ... 45 minutes later, we make it to the vet.
5 puppies! All perfect, and healthy. 4 girls and 1 boy. They are absolutely gorgeous. They were almost walking as Dr. B handed each one off to me, Amelia, and 2 other wonderful helpers and we hardly had to do much of anything to get the fluid out as they were not very 'moist'. Vibrant, and strong . . .

Now that we have healthy pups who all survived the whelp, we will send the final half of the stud fee to the sire's breeder in Canada and let the fun begin of keeping these pups alive.
On Day 2 Amy trimmed the pups' toenails. (They are long when they are born!) Since the dew claws were removed on D.O.B. Day 1, it was best to wait a bit for yet more stress on the pups.
The milk came in nicely after a good day and half so the "fun part" (challenging part) begins.
Neonates. Pug neonates. It's a challenge with the nursing -- with those flat faces they can aspirate easily so, to avoid aspiration pneumonia (which is deadly to a pup), we oversee every feeding and suck the noses, and sometimes nebulize, after each nursing session. Also, pug mamas are sometimes not the best at making sure there's not a pup underneath them, so .... a human has to supervise each nursing 100% of the time. Lilly is a good mama and lays still to let the puppy's nurse. When she "pops up" to inspect them and clean/lick, she does however sometimes not realize she's sitting on a pup, so ... yes, this will require constant supervision. We count 5 puppies, (sometimes they get wrapped up in one of the blankets), then let her lick. We've heard other pug breeders say how they lost a puppy just while they went to use the restroom or get a cup of coffee so, someone is always there sitting beside the whelping box. Amy or Jeff. Jeff took the Saturday duty while Amy slept (since she didn't sleep the night before) and Amy took the night duty. Pups nurse every 90 minutes so that leaves a 15-30 minute break to catch a catnap or do other chores.
Here are the pups, and Mama, Day 3:

Day 4: We give her (starting day 1) a bit of dark beer (a few teaspoons over baked chicken or liver or such). It helps bring in the milk. The dark beer and the genius Galactagogues worked magic as usual … started ENS today.
Day 5: A face this pretty is worth waking up for every 2 hours! (Of course Amy had to go in for a follow up appointment with her doctor and, convincing her of this was a little trickier. Good news, though, from the doctor and bloodwork, despite the sleep deprivation.)
Here's mama Lilly inspecting Georgiana . . .
Day 6 - Lamb, Liver, and Yogurt hits the spot with mama Lilly.
Day 7:
Day 8 - Ideally, a puppy doubles its birth weight by Day 10. Well, today's weigh-in showed Georgiana and Penelope have already achieved that goal, plus the other 3 are not far behind. They should be at the perfect weight by Day 10 no problem! Praise God.
Day 9 special photo shoots ;)

Weight has doubled on all pups! Wahoo! Continuing with daily ENS (Early Neurological Stimulation exercises) and adding some other protocols with textures, snuggles, scents a few days early since they are so strong and developing so well.

Day 11:
Day 12:
Protocols - Typically, our puppies' eyes begin to open (or 'peak a bit') on or around Day 13. Pups at this age are still deaf and mostly dependent upon their sense of smell to get around. Once the first pup's eyes start to open, we begin "startle response" exercises (to see when ears open) which tells us the Transitional Period has begun. Since pups can't carry, shake, or interact much, and can't hear (or see yet), it's all about "feels". We introduce new tactile items (big soft toys with crackle paper, yoga mats, burlap, feathers, fleece, aluminum foil, carboard boxes, different types of fabric, etc.) and a different scent. Each day, even before their eyes open, they experience something novel (like this hairdryer with cool/slightly warm comforting air, walking from room to room). We dim the lights at this stage because their eyes will be sensitive once they open. We increase the number of cuddle sessions each day and we keep the whelping box free of lots of clutter, only introducing 1 or 2 items at a time then removing. (They are not walking yet but they are beginning to try to 'toddle'. Puppies need lots of uncluttered space to learn to walk.) We have added pee pads on one side of the whelping box and they do their walrus move to try get to the pee pads to eliminate. They are just starting to get the hang of elimination but it's a process ;) They are continuing to nurse with the mama every 2-3 hours (we oversee every feeding to clean nose in case they aspirate a bit and get milk in their nose, and we also help mother with the puppies' elimination sometimes to give her a break. We add benebac to the pups as needed and the mama has plenty of probiotics and oral cal. Lilly's favorite dish now (she's a pretty picky eater lately) is baked chicken with egg noodles. insert eye roll. She also loves added ricotta cheese.
Lilly Day 15 was quite proud of having found this turkey paw ... she didn't want to nurse lest she lose her prize possession. ;)
The puppy party is scheduled! It will be a Jane Austen inspired Tea Party (Pawtea lol). Already planning the menu ;) and ordered some molds for chocolates and pastries. The date is actually July 8 (not 22) so we will need to fix that on the invitation. But so excited!
Penelope the Performance Pug! Yep, the first one to try the "tunnel" lolz.
Day 19: Storytime with Mother Goose!
Day 20:
Day 23: Getting a bit better at walking (going to the big pen several times a day to "practice" on the yoga mats) and still nursing every few hours. The pups got a sponge bath with warm cloth (they are still learning how to navigate elimination ... tough when you are still learning to walk lolz!) and had their nails done to keep short and smooth to prevent hurting mama Lilly.
Tea Party Pugs at 5 Weeks of Age:
Some outside playtime during a break in the heatwave weather. (Breakish .... lower 90s instead of upper 90s plus).
6 Week Puppy Paw-Tea!
July 12, 2023 - The puppies had a fantastic visit checkup with our awesome vet today at Galleria Animal Clinic. All in great health -- healthy hearts, lungs, eyes, nares, patellas, hips, and fecal clear! They received their first round of vaccinations and got plenty of CERFS (delicious turkey baked just for the visit) so they didn't even notice the shots! All around 3 lbs, a bit under or over, with Emma topping the scale at 4 lbs. Sigh of relief. The amazing tech, Hunter, got some quality snuggle time in, too!
7 weeks old -- working on recalls, manding, soft bite, drop. These are such fun pups to train.
