Pickwick Pugs recommends pawTree and NuVet. We do not recommend anything else. From the food (kibble and freeze-dried raw), to the treats, supplements, bone broth, and superfood pairings.)
All pawTree products are "Lilibeth tested". Our most finicky (or dog) we have ever owned, we have not found a pawTree product (food or treat or topping) that she doesn't love.
We also give all of our dogs (pugs and all-american rescues) NuVet daily vitamin every morning for breakfast, plus fish oil and the pawTree probiotic.
We ask that all Pickwick pug owners (or any pet owner!) continue to use these products because we know the results first-hand. We also feed raw and we offer raw goats milk to ALL of our pets for breakfast (puppies through seniors.)
A holistic vet recommended this nutritional plan for us and we have never turned back. Holistic vets are especially interested in proactive, preventative medicine. We have seen amazing results and have never turned back to the foods we used to buy from pet stores.

Why do we recommend pawTree and NuVet?
At Pickwick Pugs, we are serious about promoting long-term health. We do NOT short-change our puppies with cheap brands full of corn, by-products or low-end fillers. Health is a top priority for us. Pickwick Pugs personally invests a lot financially to make sure the puppies receive some of the best nutrition on the market with therapeutic levels of ingredients. We work hard to give our puppies the best start in life.
We only recommend pawTree food (especially the freeze-dried raw) and supplements, or raw, and NuVet vitamins.

We have been truly blessed to have avoided horrific issues many other pug breeders have dealt with, such as PDE. Much of this, of course, is genetics but also our extensive health screening, research, and amazing guidance from longtime, very experienced breeders and veterinarians .... and prayer.
We also believe nutrition is an important component and we believe so strongly in the quality of pawTree™ and Nuvet products that we actually offer an extended health guarantee for Pickwick pugs who continue to use the customized nutritional plan we recommend, revised as needed with our ongoing recommendations.
We want Pickwick pugs to thrive, not just survive. When our Pickwick show pugs enter the Best of Breed ring ... or even when our rescues enter Home Depot! ... we want them to shine from the inside out. We have learned over the years, first-hand, that cutting corners with cheaper food doesn't work in the long run so we don't mess around anymore with what we feed our pets. We've learned that by being pro-active with purposeful supplementation, we can avoid nearly 80% of costly vet visits.
We do NOT recommend Science Diet, Purina Proplan, Purina One, Wellness, Taste of the Wild, Stella and Chewy, Diamond Naturals, Origen, Fromm and most other brands. Ziwi, Farmina, Carna4, and raw diets are the only other foods we would consider but we love pawTree -- the entire experience -- and love supporting a smaller company and USA made., We also love supporting companies who have NEVER had any recalls (pawTree and NuVet). These videos explain some of our concerns with many of these popular brands . . . . .

what we feed our dogs and recommend
- We give all of our dogs -- show and rescue pugs, and pug-wannabee All-Americans -- a daily vitamin (NuVet). We prefer the powder form which we sprinkle a bit over each pug's morning breakfast along with a squirt of fish oil.
- We also add fish oil to all the pugs' breakfast (puppies, adults, seniors).
- We feed a combination of pawTree™ kibble (alternating the flavors/varieties regularly) plus pawTree™ freeze-dried raw or (on special days) actual raw food (we love www.mypetcarnivore and also use a local Co-op). We top the food with the amazing pawTree™ broth or raw goats milk (various brands, but we love the one from www.mypetcarnivore.)
- For special needs which occasionally arise, (for example, to boost immune system after traveling or being at a dog show, cognitive issues with our senior dogs, digestive issues, dry skin, dull coat with the mama's after whelping, smelly ears, picky eaters, low energy, sensitive stomach, stiff/sore joints, urinary tract infections, tartar, anxiety, bad breath, bad gas, aches and occasional discomfort, loose stools. .... you name it), we use pawTree's™ amazing supplements.

Our daily house cleaner
Our daily cleaner for house (and we use a STEAM MOP - and also periodically use Kenesol):

Pet Safe, eco-friendly Cleaning Products (sometimes we throw kibble or treats on the floor to 'distract' when needing to slip through a door and with these eco-friendly products we know they are not toxic to our cutie pies. We use a steamer mop, too. The scent is not overwhelming, yet odors are really neutralized. Additionally, we are supporting animal rescue when we use these products which we love. It makes house cleaning easier knowing we're helping animals in need. ;)
TREATS

Treats - We use 3 primary sources for our treats:
1) Life's Abundance (we've used these for years and have a monthly auto ship the pugs look forward to). Even our finicky pugs love these treats, especially the water buffalo, and we know the ingredients are safe. This is where we get our bully sticks and some other chews like the pig snouts. We get the freeze-dried liver now with PawTree. (FYI, we always avoid treats you find at pet stores, Target, Walmart etc. such as Biljac. Check the labels ... they're not healthy, and the pugs don't like them either).
2) PawTree - We also have an auto ship with Paw Tree for food, special supplements like fish oil, and of course treats! Omg these treats are 100% natural PURE meat and some extras like pumpkin or kale. The pugs love them. We've tried them all and every single variety was "Lilibeth approved" (Lilibeth is the most picky pug we've ever owned. Ever.) Our all-time favorite from Pawtree is their mix to bake treats (ginger snaps, snickerdoodles). We love treat baking day and have a pug cookie cutter (along with the bone, dog house, fire hydrant) and it makes us happy doing this for the pugs. They love snickerdoodle day!

3) In addition to these treats we also dehydrate things like chicken gizzards sliced, chicken hearts, livers, chicken paws, sirloin strips, lamb, liver etc. when we can find time, but we always look forward to our autoships. We go this route over chewy as we know the quality will be consistent. We use Chewy, too, for toys, crates, nylabones, kongs and such. Special show products like show leads we find at Cherrybrook.com
grooming

- Regular grooming: We use our own shampoo bar that we make ourselves plus these "spaw products". We have also used and really like these products which we buy at dog shows: Isle of Dogs shampoo and conditioner (#16 White Coat Evening Primrose Oil Dog Shampoo; #50 Light Management Dog Conditioner; #62 Evening Primrose Oil Dog Conditioning Mist.)
- Dog Shows: Trick= We sneak a tiny bit of an essential fragrance oil that is safe for dogs (such as a Sandalwood Vanilla) into their conditioning mist (or just a spray bottle with water) to make the judge notice the pug ;) ;) OR, if we don't have that, we spray the pug's show lead with Diva. We always (even with baths that are not just before a dog show) use a conditioner which really helps control shedding. We comb the conditioner through to spread it evenly, let it sit at least 5 minutes, then we blow dry using a hair dryer specifically made for dogs. Almost every day we use this conditioning spray (which we water down). We mist the coat always before brushing each pug most every morning with a Boar brush as it can damage a coat to brush when dry, or when very wet. Just a damp misting is ideal.
- Puppies: For puppies we use the NuVet puppy shampoo (use code 784795). We prefer to dremel nails and recommend the diamond bit. We rinse eyes with saline solution when needed and we use the ear cleaning solution of NuVet at and in between bathtime.

On this website we have included links to products that we use regularly with our own grumble and that we highly recommend. Anyone who knows us can vouch that we only use the best of the best products for our pets -- food, shampoo, treats, vitamins, even our toile designer crate covers -- so consider anything we recommend as thoroughly tried and proven.
Most of the products we recommend are manufactured in the USA by small family companies. These small American companies can’t compete with the big dollar marketing campaigns of the large multinational conglomerates that control most of the pet supply business. We hope you will choose to support small family companies like ours and many of the manufacturers we recommend, instead of large multinational conglomerates that are known for food and product recalls as well as off-shore sourcing and manufacturing. Affiliate Statement Disclaimer: Some of those products have affiliate links, where we get a very small commission for referral. Those commissions help support the time we spend in testing, reviewing, and sharing our experiences with those products. WE ARE NOT PAID FOR FAVORABLE PRODUCT REVIEWS and our opinions are our own. |
But Pickwick Pugs ALSO raise money when they train! Aside from the pugs loving the treats we list in our store, we love the fact that all of our purchases help support animal rescue. Same thing for when we clean our house!
When our pugs eat their treats they support animal rescue!
When we clean our pugs' bedroom, we help rescue neglected animals!
At Pickwick Pugs we use some amazing Life's Abundance and pawTree products. From treats, fish oil, to our own shampoo and conditioner, or eco-friendly pet-safe cleaning products, with every Life's Abundance or pawTree purchase, we help rescue neglected and unwanted animals. The non-profit arm of the Life's Abundance company, The Dr. Jane Foundation, provides financial support to empower the noble, life-saving efforts of animal rescue groups. Every time we place an order, a contribution is made to Life's Abundance non-profit's grant fund. The bigger your order, the larger the donation! This foundation also provides emergency funding to immediately address the needs that arise from disasters such as floods and fires across the U.S. With pawTree purchases, we support Smoky Mountain Service Dogs, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to enhance the physical and psychological quality of life for wounded Veterans by providing custom trained mobility assistance service dogs at no cost to the Veteran.
Not only do we support animal rescue and wounded veterans by using these products, but our pugs actually love (yes, some pugs can be picky eaters) Life's Abundance and pawTree treats. Our pugs don't break-out with the "pimples" and red spots on their face when we use their pet-friendly cleaners and we love that there have been no recalls on their products in the 20+ years they have been in business which is largely due to their extensive research, testing, and quality control. Finally, we love ......
- no artificial flavors, colors, preservatives
- no corn or corn glutens, no soy
- no wheat or wheat gluten

Our MOST picky eater, Lilibeth, (who never likes the treats from local pet stores and of course turns her nose up at those biscuits they give her at Chick-fil-A or the bank), LOVES all of the Life's Abundance and pawTree treats. We keep the Buffalo lungs, Chicken hearts, and Water Buffalo chews by Life's Abundance and the pawTree's Duck & Orange Strips and Roasted Chicken, and about 7 other varieties of pawTree treats we jog up on the ez ship. These pawTree treats are so incredibly fresh and healthy ... 100% natural.
As soap makers ourselves, we are pretty particular about scents and ingredients, so we appreciate the amazing fragrance and quality ingredients in pawTree's "spaw" line. We also like Isle of dogs which we get a dog shows, but we also use pretty regularly our Rosemary Delight Shampoo bar which we make ourselves. Once we switched to Life's Abundance pet-friendly, eco- friendly, nontoxic for pets cleaning products, we stopped seeing those occasional "pimples" irritations on some of the pugs' faces which harsher cleaners like Mr. Clean had caused. Who knew?! (Also, be careful what type of bowls you use for your pet's water and food dishes ..... only use metal, ceramic etc. and only certain types of plastic). Since the skin is one of the largest organs, we know the switch to these non-toxic, fully biodegradable, neutral pH cleaners which contain no harmful phosphates is helping our pugs inside and out. These products actually clean just as well as the Lysol and Mr. Clean we used to use, if not better than and they do not emit noxious odors -- they are not overpowering. Whereas Mr. Clean and such just camouflage smells, the Life's Abundance BioDeodorizer actually eliminates the source of the odors by turning them into nature's most basic compounds (water and carbon dioxide) without leaving bacterial waste behind on the surface.
