D.O.B. Friday, May 17 for both Annie and Lilibeth! This means we will be sharing puppy party and other fun things! Given that it was just 3 pups with Lilibeth's litter and 2 with Annie's, the 2 combined almost create a 'normal' litter. (Actually, with pugs, singletons and small litters of 2 and 3 is quite common. You are really lucky with a 6-7 puppy litter.) All 3 of Lilibeth's pups were girls! I'll post all the pups here, (including Annie's), and some shots from the vet.

7-29-24: The puppies are 10 weeks old now! They have been training and socializing hard! Saturday night they went to a restaurant and met all sorts of people (sat outback on the patio) and today, 7-29-24, they saw Dr Williams at Galleria Animal Clinic to get their 2nd round of puppy vaccinations plus AKC reunite microchip. Doc says they are super healthy -- lungs, heart, patellas, hips -- and fecals were clear. We got a "pebble sand box" for the to walk around in to strengthen their pasterns and such. It's a roundtuit we've meant to do for years now. Tonight they will do their paintings and we'll have another bath and blow dry spa time!
Keep away! This magnolia leaf is MINE! Outside playtime.
8 weeks old - Socialization and puppy evaluations! The pups got to see and smell and hear new things -- first visit to the ocean, first long car ride, met all sorts of new folks!
7.5 weeks old - The puppies saw Dr. Borden today for their 2nd physical exam, fecal, and round one of puppy shots. They each got a fabulous A+ health score -- healthy lungs, hearts, patellar, hips, nares, breathing, eyes etc. No parasites, fecal was clear. They also did great emotionally and didn't even seem to be fazed! We did give them a special concoction of cream cheese and chicken livers, though, right when they were about to give the shots and such. Kitty is our vet tech's favorite. They fell in love with her at the 6-week puppy party. They also each had their first dehydrated chicken paw! Before this exciting day ends, they will each get another bath and blow-dry for their puppy evaluations tomorrow! We will leave early in the morning to get to Destin, FL by noon. Temperament evaluations went as we expected. We love puppy culture protocols so much! They really help these pups be the best they can be ... as bomb proof as possible! Here are a few shots of the CERF's at vet today . . . .
Puppies watching tv - July 7, 2024
6 week puppy party for the Baskin Robbins and Dr Seuss litters was a grand success! We had a Baskin Robbins' icecream cake and "green" deviled eggs (green eggs and ham) and the puppies met so many amazing people. Guest list included professional dog trainers, families, opera singers, vet tech, men with beards, and longtime pug breeders. The puppies' treats included lamb, cheese, and a special liverwurst mix with cream cheese for the "challenging" tasks. We were delighted with the outcome of temperaments and surprised with a couple. (We thought Baskin was more reserved but he was the life of the party ... well, there was food involved!) Thank you SO much to everyone who came to help us socialize these special pups.
Puppies' first session on "sit". We use a food lure at first but this is gradually faded and just the hand and verbal cue is given. Eventually, the puppy will sit just with the hand signal alone, or the verbal cue. To "advance' the skill, you can work on duration of sit ... distractions when holding the sit stay ... distance from you and the puppy when you give the command and other fun things.
The puppies work on "Load the Clicker" (or "Charge the Mark"). We like to train using the clicker but after awhile, once we know the puppy truly understands a new behavior, we also sometimes use "yes". It is not as effective in training but sometimes a necessity when you simply can't find that clicker.
The puppies have been training with cream cheese (plus a pinch of Braunschweiger mixed in) so they were in desperate need of a bath and blow dry. We try to sponge bath and use baby wipes to clean for as long as possible but this was a "de-crunchifying" mission ;) It was time, too, to tape their ears to start to train them to hang correctly so that they framed the face. Button ears vs. Rose ears etc.

Day 17 - Today's new toy was the "singing" Octopus and their challenge was their first dress-up! There were two pups who doth protested but most were pretty chillax. In fairness, the 2 that protested had the smallest dresses ha ha so it was a little trickier getting it on. Seems like a silly thing to do at such a young age, but we try to give the pups an easy challenge each day (whether it's just smelling new things or being covered with a cloth or a new texture, hair dryer, etc. or something fancier like "dress up"). It helps us know more and more what each puppy's temperament is about and gives us an idea of things to work on (more handing, more sound protocols etc.) We are including startle-response exercises each day (you can learn more about this at PuppyCulture.com) and of course the puppy playlist with classical and soothing music. It was funny how the puppies were so enthralled with the octopus, with one puppy going up and putting her head on a leg and just staring at it intensely. The most important question you are probably asking .... "is the puppy breath in yet?" And the answer is a resounding YES! Here are so photos and a video from Day 17.
Day 10 - Weight doubled with each pup! That's an important milestone to meet. It seemed that Robbin was up ALL night as the "last one at the milk bar" just chowing down in between Day 10 and 11. Well, that's probably because she was getting ready for another huge milestone .... her eyes opened on Day 11! That's a first for us as it is almost always Day 13 (or 14). Later during the day, Baskin's eyes opened too so both pups out of the Baskin Robbin litter have now officially entered the Transitional Period. We will up cuddle sessions and dim the lights and also start playing the Puppy Playlist (mostly classical music) as the ears will open shortly after. Pups are crying now so I have to get back to the nursery ... ever 2 hours is really catching up with me with no REM cycle but it's worth it. They are so beautiful! We are very blessed. In fact, because it was so special with her eyes opening on Day 11 I had to write a song!
Days 7-9
Day 6 and thriving!
May 20-21, 2024: Having "2 mamas" for puppies is a first for us. Nursing simultaneously worked well regarding milk production and avoiding engorgement, but it was too tough keeping an eye on each of the puppies. (You have to oversee 100% of the feeding and constantly watch each puppy. As soon as we see any milk come out of their nose while nursing, we wipe with a tissue and if they get super 'milky nose' we suck their noses with the occobaby. It happens fast so even if we are sitting their "sort of watching" them, but also looking at phone or something, we can miss this. Having to juggle 2 whelping boxes was just too much, so we actually moved Lilibeth into Annie's whelping box! Thankfully, they are getting along fine and there is no tension between the girls -- sometimes mamas can be protective etc. Honestly, I think they enjoy having each other's company! So, we alternate 2 on one mama, and 3 pups on the other, then switch it around each feeding. If one mama has better antibodies, then these pups are covered. On Monday, Annie just didn't seem to be her usual jolly self so we took her in to see Dr. Williams just to be safe. Everything sounded fine -- heart etc., but her bloodwork showed that she was a bit anemic. We cooked some liver for her and she did not object to this! Lilibeth gobbled it up, too!
Here are the pups in their puppy warmer 5-21-24 (4 days old!) . . . .
Day 1 (May 18, 2024) - The pups turned 1 day old today! They had their toenails trimmed (dew claws were removed yesterday by the vet) and nursed regularly. All are latching on well and the mamas are recovering from the c-section nicely. We have been alternating feedings (Annie, then Lilibeth) but as it seemed like milk was starting to come in more we started to split up and nurse simultaneously (2 and 3 or 3 and 2). I am amazed at how Lilibeth has been with this litter .... licking, staying still etc. ... she is a completely different mama than with her last litter. Honestly, I think Annie and Lilibeth enjoy having the company back there. It's so amazing their pups were both born on the same day. Meant to be! Here are the pups with their colors and kennel names, 1 day old . . .
May 16-17 overnight and early morning - No sleep for Amy last night. Lilibeth decided to join Annie in the "nesting" (digging at linens and loud panting with early contractions and discomfort etc.) from around 2 AM on. We decided to do a c-section with both girls for several factors. Both girl's progesterone was 0.6 so it was definitely low enough and, as it turned out, one pup was breech with Annie and there were adhesions from her previous c-section with The Flying Kilt litter years ago. There would have been complications had we tried to freewhelp. Alas, another factor was that if we tried to freewhelp and ran into issues (our vet won't be available this weekend ,,, his daughter is graduating vet school and will be joining the staff soon!), the local er vets here now all require a spay for all emergency c-sections. (Even if it's a responsibly bred, health tested, show pup who is 50 years into an important line who has won Westminster etc. etc. ..... such a sad decision to lump all breeders into one pile and it will have detrimental effects on breeds longterm). We do plan to spay these girls, and this was their last litter, but we don't like to lose too much blood with 2 surgeries, especially when they have so much to do taking care of pups etc., PLUS, well, not all vets understand anesthesia with brachy breeds like our vets do. It was the safest choice given the timing. Risking losing our girls is not an option. They truly are our children. So. Our gut and rationalization paid off this time.
May 16 Afternoon - So, the progesterone came back at 3.8. Vet said it was ok to proceed with a c-section but we have always been instructed by our mentors and other breeders to wait until it drops below 2. Since Annie was not showing any other signs yet (not nesting, no colostrum etc.) we decided to wait until tomorrow's c-section appointment (which was supposed to be Lilibeth's). Annie's temp had dropped to 98.5 this morning, but, again, no other signs. It's a risk because this could mean a trip to ER vet tonight, and not all vets are experienced with anesthesia for brachy breeds. But, we tried to listen to our gut and follow the advice of many other experienced breeders.
"Dogs typically enter stage I labor within 24 hours of a decline in serum progesterone to < 2 ng/mL, which develops in conjunction with increased circulating prostaglandins and is commonly associated with a transient drop in body temperature (< 99°F [37.2°C]). Monitoring serial progesterone levels for impending labor is problematic because in-house kits enabling rapid results are inherently inaccurate between 2 and 5 ng/mL. Commercial laboratories offering quantitative progesterone by chemiluminescence typically have a 12- to 24-hour turnaround time, which is not rapid enough to make decisions about immediate obstetric intervention. Progesterone levels can drop rapidly in a matter of hours. If progesterone is < 2 ng/mL, gestation is likely at term and labor is pending. Clearly, it is beneficial to obtain information about ovulation timing, minimally by determining the onset of cytologic diestrus (the diestrual shift), to evaluate length of gestation at term. Elective cesarean sections can be performed safely at >62 days gestation; earlier, neonatal surfactant is not reliably present."
All of this means nothing to Annie, except she got to eat breakfast after all! (Not that she's that interested in food right now, but the attention with Amy sitting on floor with her hand feeding her is pretty swell to Annie. "Bless your heart" is all that comes to mind right now with these 2 girls who are about to pop. Annie's tail is wagging still, though. She's the happiest and sweetest pug on earth (well, except for Lilibeth).

May 16 AM - This morning Jeff took Annie to the vet for a reverse progesterone test. If the number is low enough (under 2) we will proceed with the scheduled c-section at 11 today. She is about to pop, bless her heart. And no breakfast in case we do the c-section. We're waiting now ... should be a few more minutes. It's so nerve wracking!
May 15 - Appetites are not what they used to be ... Annie is so stuffed so all I could find that Lilibeth and Annie would eat tonight was MY sirloin steak I had planned to cook for myself. Alas, they enjoyed it (but only after I cut it up into small bites and hand fed them.) Insert eye roll here ;)
May 13 - Annie and Lilibeth went to the vet this morning to get their radiographs. It looks like Annie has 2 pups.
May 12
May 10 - 1 week to go!
April 15, 2024: Annie's ultrasound this morning at Hope Animal Clinic revealed, according to the veterinarian Dr. Fuller, that there are at least 3-4 pups!
March 16 and 18, 2024: Progesterone testing took a while (so expensive!) but Annie finally decided it was time and her numbers climbed. Since Amy was out of town at the dog show with Eliza and Mr. Drysdale, Jeff took Annie to the vet to help with the AI's (#1 on March 16 and #2 on March 18).
If all is going well and there are pups, this is about the day we will head to do an X-ray (radiograph) to do a puppy count and check sizes, positioning etc. Day 63 from ovulation will be the following Friday, May 17th. These dates are always approximations, and we are not sure if we will do a c-section prior or not. So much depends upon number and size of pups and other factors, but it's nice to have a "ballpark" of approximate dates planned ahead of time.
Here is the DNA of Parentage we completed for the litter. Robert (GCH Hill Country's I'll Bee Your Shining Star) is definitely the sire:
