Pickwick's Captain of Nampara (Winston, Kennel name Ross) wows everyone at the Greenville, SC show cluster!
July, 2023, Winston (Ross's new name) got to be a show dog for a long weekend cluster! He had a super adventure and strutted around the ring with the amazing handler, Harry Bennett. For a boy who hasn't been to any shows before, and only 1 practice handling class, he sure made it look easy and wasn't afraid of ANYthing! Totally bombproof. Many thanks to his human family for raising him so well and keeping him in "show condition" to make this a possibility. In addition to bringing home some ribbons (Reserve Winners Dog TWICE! and always 1st Place in his Class!) Winston also paid a visit to the little Yellow Truck, so perhaps one day you will find his beautiful face and head and amazing coat in a future litter. Thank you Winston for the adventures we had!
Caroline (new name Charli)
Charli (Pickwick's Keeper of Horace's Heart) is a gorgeous girl. She's super smart and a bit of the leader of the pack. Charli first moved to San Diego with her amazing mom but now has moved to Oregon and lives in "the most dog friendly city in the US". What a lucky dog. Her forever mom leads an active life so, just in her first year of life, Charli learned to do all sorts of things and even paddle boarding! Here is a link with favorite scenes from her first year of life.
Charli has learned to hike, and is amazing at recall (she can play on the dog beaches off leash and will return to her mom immediately), she goes on fun trips into town and is just living the life.Having been active in pug rescue for many years, her new human mom will always be able to stay one step ahead of this brilliant pug ;) We are so thankful to have found this perfect match!

Demelza (new name Suzie)
Demelza, (Pickwick's Maiden of Redruth Fair), lives with a wonderful family in Tennessee and is pursuing a life of cherished family pet plus working to be an amazing therapy dog. She is training hard and will go with her mother (a retired special ed teacher) to bring joy and comfort to patients and students at hospitals, schools, and other places. What an important life she is leading and how well loved and trained she is. We are so very blessed to have found this family for her to make her shine and bring joy to others.

Pickwick's Poldark and Handsome
Poldark will be living in Florida with an amazing home as a cherished pet. He might also possibly be pursuing therapy dog work in the future. He is definitely a handsome boy and has been a great therapy puppy for us during these past 12 weeks. We will miss him dearly! Dwight (new name Murphy)
Murphy Dwight, (M.D. - Pickwick's Doctor of Love), truly lived up to his registered name ...he is a true lover boy, and his wonderful furever family in Wisconsin love him so much. We had the privilege of meeting this family when they flew down for the 6 week puppy party! Dwight always had Amy's heart (don't tell his siblings) so we are thankful that he eventually worked his lover boy magic on his amazing forever family as well.

Horace (new name Bear)
Pickwick's Stealer of the Show
Horace will be living in Greenwich Village in Manhattan with a longtime pug owner. We might need to make a special trip to NYC to see Mr Horace at some point ... then we can see Moose and Myles (from the Stars Fell on Alabama litter) who live nearby. As of 8/14/23, we don't know how Horace (Bear) is doing because we haven't been able to get in touch with his owner. We sure hope both of them are OK yet we worry about him daily. Thank you to everyone who sends us updates and keeps in touch. It means more than you will ever know, and it also helps us be better breeders. Hopefully, his owner is just busy and we will touch base soon. Ross (new name Winston)
Pickwick's Captain of Nampara
Winston, (Kennel name: Ross), lives with a wonderful family in Vestavia, Alabama. He is only the 2nd Pickwick pug to be living nearby (the other being Fergus in Mountain Brook) as we just have never found a prospective family nearby who we thought would be the best match for a given puppy. Ross is beautiful and probably would have been our show pick. As it turned out, his incredible family allowed Winston to go on a special adventure summer, 2023 to be shown at a huge show in Greenville, SC, and also collected for possible participation in future litters. He was "tutored" the very next week, so we are incredibly grateful to them for sharing him with us, and trusting us. Honestly, we will probably never do that again ("borrow someone's child lol) because it was SO stressful being responsible and always worrying something would happen to their furry 4-legged child! It truly was so valuable to be able to hang with him and see how he had matured, how he had grown out, feel is incredible thick coat, see his gorgeous face and eyes, and experience his phenomenal temperament. That was a memory of a lifetime for us. AKC Registration #: TS57359602 AKC Reunite Microchip: 956000015387423 Ross' Graduation . . . .

Note: Alas, the entire "vlog/blog" on this webpage was accidentally deleted on 11-14-22 so, for those of you who have been following along, we will try to play catchup and add back as many photos and videos possible, albeit perhaps not chronologically. Sorry ;) As a pianist sometimes my fingers move too fast, which is great for Mozart but not for Weebly ;)
Gotcha days .... January 7th and 8th .... were very bittersweet with tears trying to form on a face grinning ear to ear. We were so very blessed to find the absolute perfect homes for each puppy and that made the tough part of saying goodbye so much easier. Horace (new name Bear) left for Manhattan on Saturday with his new dad. Alas, I failed to take a photo, and also couldn't find my camera to take a photo of Demelza (new name Suzie) with her awesome new mom and dad. Demelza headed to Tennessee on Saturday to eventually become a therapy dog to visit schools and hospitals. Poldark left on Saturday as well and headed with his awesome new family to Land O Lakes Florida . . . .
With 2 puppies left by Saturday night, Dwight, Caroline, and Amy enjoyed dinner at The District with Caroline's new mother (and the pups heard their first LOUD outside DJ music lol.) Caroline spent Saturday night with her new awesome mom in her Hilton Hotel room and even enjoyed some steak since thanks to her Grandmother, Miss Dior, who ate the food out of the puppy baskets when we weren't looking. Grandma's got your back Charli!
So, Mister Dwight spent Saturday night all alone in the puppy pen. I think he enjoyed the peace and quiet a bit and he especially enjoyed having his Goat Milk and special breakfast all to himself before we headed to the airport Sunday morning to meet his wonderful new mom and flying to Wisconsin.
Godspeed little ones. You have blessed our lives SO much these past 12 weeks and we will NEVER forget you! I think our prayers were answered a thousandfold . . . .
"Dear Lord, thank you for this day and for Your holy presence in our lives. Thank You for being in control and for the wonderful plan you have for us and each of our puppies’ lives. Heavenly Father, it is Your Spirit that gives life and peace. May my eyes never lose sight of Your love and power in my life.
Dear Jesus, I release any anger, bad feelings, resentment, or any other wrong attitude before you now. I lay it at Your feet and release and forgive those who have wronged me. Forgive me for all the times I have hurt others and I pray You would heal the wounds I have created. Bless all those whom I have met, and will meet on this earth.
Thank You for the blessing of all of our animals. Thank You for creating them and for their companionship. Heavenly Father, You made everything on earth. You made all that we see including our dogs. Lord You care about these animals and, as a result, we should too. The Bible in Proverbs 12:10 says that godly people care for the needs of their animals – Your beloved creatures. Give us wisdom, strength, love, and guidance to know how to care for the animals you have entrusted to our care
We ask for the perfect development of each puppy in each stage of development. May the brain and every organ and every part of each body grow normally and according to Your plan. May each little puppy have no defect or any health problems while in the womb and after birth. We ask for normal, healthy, and happy puppies.
Dear Lord, please protect the mother’s as well and keep them safe and healthy. Give us wisdom and grace to avoid the things that would prove detrimental to the development of each puppy. Send a hedge of angels, Lord, to surround and protect each puppy in the womb, that each little life may develop into the perfectly healthy new-born puppy.
Guide us in knowing what to do at each stage. Guide the doctors and all those who will help us in making the correct decisions regarding when and how to whelp, and how to care for each puppy. Guide us as we care for the newborn puppies and please make it abundantly clear, dear Lord, which families to choose for each puppy so they will continue to care for them so they may be a blessing in this world, bring joy and comfort, and a glimpse of Your kingdom while on this earth.
Please help us to trust You at every turn, as we understand Your ways are not what we can plan for. We pray for an attitude of grace to those around us, even when we are most tired. Thank you that we can find rest in Christ and come to him when we are weary. May we find any needed strength in You. Thank You for being in control, and for the wonderful plan You have for all of our lives.
We ask these things in the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, to whom we give all thanks and praise.
Amen

Painting with 11-week-old puppies can be MESSY but oh so fun. If you look closely at the paintings you might spot some Kong treat and dog hair lolz! Thankfully, no one "made a mark" on the paintings this year .... Gus, the singleton from the Emerald litter, will always be remembered with the "master painting" (painted by every pug we've bred) .... think Tinkle Tinkle little star. I'm reminded of Claude Monet's Impression Sunrise painting with the litter painting (painted by each of the Poldark litter puppies). Yes, I'm probably that blind stage mom who is pretty sure she heard the puppies recite Shakespeare, or tap the rhythm to a Gershwin tune, but ..... I still think it's an awesome painting and can't wait to display it on our fireplace mantel.
Since the puppies were so sweet to cooperate with me in creating their paw painted masterpieces ;) I improvised a little piece of music for each one inspired by their sweet spirits and personalities. A souvenir for the future to remember them ...... ;)
These pups LOVE to play the piano!
The pups obviously REALLY love Rossini!
Thankfully, we had a break in the horribly cold weather so the pups were able to enjoy a fabulous day of outings again. This morning they had their 2nd round of vaccinations plus microchip and got a clean bill of health from Dr. Williams. The 1st round of vaccinations was with Dr. Borden, so the pups have seen both doctors now. We brought some deLIcious cream cheese mixed with liverwurst to feed the pups each time the doctor gave them a shot or did anything to make them uncomfortable. For the most part, they didn't notice a thing! CERFS to the rescue.
After the vet visit, we enjoyed some driving in the car again plus a trip to HomeGoods and then Field and Stream.
Demelza says "I could fit inside that Moose's nostril!"
The puppies had a very special breakfast for Christmas Day. Special Julbock 'cakes' and yogurt! Yum.
Some like cream cheese/liverwurst best, and some like chicken or turkey hearts ... but they all love training!
7 days until Christmas! YEAH it finally stopped raining so we could play outside!
Alas, the Poldark puppies made the naughty list . . . . it totally has to be a mistake (although the boys did pull off Caroline's tutu.)
The temperament evaluations were a grand success and so informative. Thanks to the amazing Abigail Witthauer (trainer/behaviorist, owner of Roverchase, founder of The Roverchase Foundation who also breeds/raises/trains Golden Retrievers to be therapy dogs) we have a better idea of which puppy will fit specific homes best and a list of "homework" tasks to complete (unique for each puppy) before gotcha day.
Perhaps we have some future running backs in this litter?
Mama Lilibeth escorts the pup on a walk through the park to see goats and ducks!
Isn't this the most amazing sound? Tell me again why our parents never let us smack?!
What a fabulous 6 week Puppy Party! Each puppy was confident and social ... such a consistent litter! We can't thank everyone who attended to help us socialize the pups (one prospective family even flew down from Wisconsin!) We all left with a puppy high and I think the puppies had a similar "human high"! The puppies will receive their first round of vaccinations on December 8, and the day before that they will have their temperament evaluations at Roverchase with Abigail Whitthauer. These amazing puppies will even be "teachers" as she is going to have her interns observe. We follow the avidog and here is a link to things which will be tested (sometimes we skip a few which really aren't applicable to pugs). A few days later, they will have their "puppy evaluations" where we take photographs of them stacking (standing) to assess conformation. Even if we do not keep a given puppy for a show prospect, it is good to have these photographs for the future to remember what specific pugs produced to see if we should repeat a breeding. In the meantime, we are working on learning how to "hold a stack" so perhaps we can get some decent photos, and socializing and clicker training basic skills. Lol, with the resource guarding exercise (where you allow the pups to chew a delicious, meaty lamb bone, then touch the pup, then take away bone, then treat, then immediately return the bone) only Dwight growled a little. (That's to be expected actually). The 2nd time he was fine ;) We do resource training a lot and frequently ..... they are pugs after all and they love their food!
The puppies enjoyed their first Thanksgiving! Of course we had to introduce them to Tom Turkey. They were not impressed. I think they just wanted to wait for the turkey treats!
Poldark litter at 4 weeks of age! This week they will be entering the 5-week 'fear phase' so we are avoiding anything that might cause them to be afraid to the point of causing longterm harm. We have added tunnels and more cuddly big toys and some hiding placed for them to crawl under. The pups also got a bath yesterday and a LONG blow dry to avoid getting a chill (it's cold in Alabama! 20 degree low!) because they were just covered in gruel lol. They don't "quite" get the eating out of the saucer yet. They are enjoying Raw Goat's milk a few times a day plus the milky gruel (like runny oatmeal consistency) and still nurse on mom a couple of times each day. We are working on the weaning .... But doing gradually for Lilibeth's and the pups' sake. It's a process ;) These pups are AMAZING at using their litterboxes! They'll be eating (or nursing) and then stop to walk over to the litterbox to do their business, then return to chow down. It's pretty amazing. Keeping the pen stellar clean is a helpful contributor but, also, sometimes some pups are just better than others and picking this up.
If you would like to become a part of the Pickwick Pugs family please contact us or, if you are interested in being considered as a future Pickwick pug owner, please complete the inquiry form so that we can get to know you better! We look forward to hearing from you!
