Here she is on gotcha day with her new family before heading to her forever home in Austin, Texas who plan to take her to restaurants, outings, and other fun things which will fit her social nature. Austin is supposed to be a super dog-friendly town so her sisters Lola and Cindy are a bit jealous I think ;) Pepper is a gorgeous pug, cobby, super soft coat, and full of delight and personality. She will thrive in this super dog-friendly city with these awesome humans!

D.O.B. Friday, May 17 for both Annie and Lilibeth! This means we will be sharing puppy party and other fun things! Given that it was just 3 pups with Lilibeth's litter and 2 with Annie's, the 2 combined almost create a 'normal' litter. (Actually, with pugs, singletons and small litters of 2 and 3 is quite common. You are really lucky with a 6-7 puppy litter.) All 3 of Lilibeth's pups were girls! I'll post all the pups here, (including Annie's), and some shots from the vet.

Cindy, Lola, and Umberto enjoyed some socialization at Rojo yesterday. It's such a dog friendly restaurant! We met up with a fellow pug lover from Georgia and had a blast.
Cindy and Lola saw Dr. Williams yesterday for their 3rd and final round of puppy shots. Here is Cindy, listening to all of our vet's amazing advice.
Gotcha day photos! Cindy and Lola are staying with us at Pickwick pugs as hopeful show girls. But Pepper left for Austin, Tx with her new amazing parents. We hope she has the best life this world can offer! We love you Pepper Kitty!!!
7-29-24: The puppies are 10 weeks old now! They have been training and socializing hard! Saturday night they went to a restaurant and met all sorts of people (sat outback on the patio) and today, 7-29-24, they saw Dr Williams at Galleria Animal Clinic to get their 2nd round of puppy vaccinations plus AKC reunite microchip. Doc says they are super healthy -- lungs, heart, patellas, hips -- and fecals were clear. We got a "pebble sand box" for the to walk around in to strengthen their pasterns and such. It's a roundtuit we've meant to do for years now. Tonight they will do their paintings and we'll have another bath and blow dry spa time!
Keep away! This magnolia leaf is MINE! Outside playtime.
8 weeks old - Socialization and puppy evaluations! The pups got to see and smell and hear new things -- first visit to the ocean, first long car ride, met all sorts of new folks!
7.5 weeks old - The puppies saw Dr. Borden today for their physical exam, fecal, and round one of puppy shots. They each got a fabulous A+ health score -- healthy lungs, hearts, patellar, hips, nares, breathing, eyes etc. They also did great emotionally and didn't even seem to be fazed! We did give them a special concoction of cream cheese and chicken livers, though, right when they were about to give the shots and such. Kitty is our vet tech's favorite. They fell in love with her at the 6-week puppy party. They also each had their first dehydrated chicken paw! Before this exciting day ends, they will each get another bath and blow-dry for their puppy evaluations tomorrow! We will leave early in the morning to get to Destin, FL by noon. Temperament evaluations went as we expected. We love puppy culture protocols so much! They really help these pups be the best they can be ... as bomb proof as possible! Here are a few shots of the CERF's at vet today . . . .
Watching TV - July 7, 2024:
6 week puppy party was a grand success! We have a Baskin Robbins' icecream cake and "green" deviled eggs (green eggs and ham) and the puppies met so many amazing people. Guest list included professional dog trainers, families, opera singers, vet tech, men with beards, and longtime pug breeders. The puppies' treats included lamb, cheese, and a special liverwurst mix with cream cheese for the "challenging" tasks. We were delighted with the outcome of temperaments and surprised with a couple. (We thought Baskin was more reserved but he was the life of the party ... well, there was food involved!) Thank you SO much to everyone who came to help us socialize these special pups.
Puppies work on "sit" (start with a lure, gradually fade food lure, then use only hand and verbal cue - notice that at first, until the puppy truly understands "sit" you do not add any verbal cue. It's the same with learning any new behavior. Don't rush to add a verbal cue or the puppy might think it means something else ....)
Puppies work on "Load the Clicker" (or "Charging the Mark")
The puppies each had a bath and (very thorough) blow dry, then nails trimmed, and -- yes -- it was time to tape their ears so they would learn to hang correctly to frame the face and not pull back. Rose ears vs button ears etc. They were covered in cream cheese from training so it was way beyond baby wipe spot cleaning!
Puppies' novel toy for the day! Choo Choo Train! (Watch to the end ... it's so funny when they knock it over).

Day 18 (well, sometime between Day 17 and 18 lol .... around 3:30 AM) - Lilibeth LOVES the chicken paws I made for the grumble so much that she would only agree to help out at the milk bar if I allowed her to keep her chicken paw in her mouth. She is the funniest most delightful pug we've ever owned -- so full of personality but kind to the core. It was so funny and adorable that Amy had to compose a little tune on Garage Band before heading back to sleep.
Day 17 - Today's toy = the Octopus toy! Today's challenge = "dress up"!
Days 11-12 and entering Day 13. All eyes are opened now!!!
10-11 days old. All the pups doubled their weight at the 10-day weigh-in (that's an important goal to meet). On day 11, Annie's girl Robbin opened her eyes and then, later in the day, her brother Baskin did so as well. Annie was 2 days ahead with regard to ovulation so it seems natural her pups would mature faster however, we've never had a pup open its eyes this early before (always day 13 or 14), so that was exciting and unexpected! This means that Annie's pups have now entered the transitional period, (but it does not mean Lilibeth's pups have). Once the first pup of a litter opens its eyes then all of them have officially entered into the transitional period. We will up cuddle sessions for all and start playing the puppy playlist of classical music as the ears open shortly after the eyes. We will also start keeping the lights dim more and continue with the textures and gr gene stimulation. Scents so far: vanilla was a win with all the girls but Baskin the boy didn't like it. Banana Nut Bread was a win with all of them! They just started crying so it's time, yet again, to nurse (every 2 hours with no REM cycle has really caught up with me at age 60). So, we'll make these updates short. Here is Annie's girl and boy with their eyes opening on Day 11! It was so special I had to write song ha ha. It's called "I turned 11 Days Old Today!"
7-9 days old
6 days old and thriving!
May 20-21, 2024: Having "2 mamas" for puppies is a first for us. Nursing simultaneously worked well regarding milk production and avoiding engorgement, but it was too tough keeping an eye on each of the puppies. (You have to oversee 100% of the feeding and constantly watch each puppy. As soon as we see any milk come out of their nose while nursing, we wipe with a tissue and if they get super 'milky nose' we suck their noses with the occobaby. It happens fast so even if we are sitting their "sort of watching" them, but also looking at phone or something, we can miss this. Having to juggle 2 whelping boxes was just too much, so we actually moved Lilibeth into Annie's whelping box! Thankfully, they are getting along fine and there is no tension between the girls -- sometimes mamas can be protective etc. Honestly, I think they enjoy having each other's company! So, we alternate 2 on one mama, and 3 pups on the other, then switch it around each feeding. If one mama has better antibodies, then these pups are covered. On Monday, Annie just didn't seem to be her usual jolly self so we took her in to see Dr. Williams just to be safe. Everything sounded fine -- heart etc., but her bloodwork showed that she was a bit anemic. We cooked some liver for her and she did not object to this! Lilibeth gobbled it up, too!
Here are the pups in their puppy warmer 5-21-24, 4 days old!
Day 1 (May 17, 2024) - The pups turned 1 day old today! They had their toenails trimmed (dew claws were removed yesterday by the vet) and nursed regularly. All are latching on well and the mamas are recovering from the c-section nicely. We have been alternating feedings (Annie, then Lilibeth) but as it seemed like milk was starting to come in more we started to split up and nurse simultaneously (2 and 3 or 3 and 2). I am amazed at how Lilibeth has been with this litter .... licking, staying still etc. ... she is a completely different mama than with her last litter. Honestly, I think Annie and Lilibeth enjoy having the company back there. It's so amazing their pups were both born on the same day. Meant to be! Here are the pups with their colors and kennel names, 1 day old . . .
May 16-17 overnight and early morning - No sleep for Amy last night. Lilibeth decided to join Annie in the "nesting" (digging at linens and loud panting with early contractions and discomfort etc.) from around 2 AM on. We decided to do a c-section with both girls for several factors. Both girl's progesterone was 0.6 so it was definitely low enough and, as it turned out, one pup was breech with Annie and there were adhesions from her previous c-section with The Flying Kilt litter years ago. There would have been complications had we tried to freewhelp. Alas, another factor was that if we tried to freewhelp and ran into issues (our vet won't be available this weekend ,,, his daughter is graduating vet school and will be joining the staff soon!), the local er vets here now all require a spay for all emergency c-sections. (Even if it's a responsibly bred, health tested, show pup who is 50 years into an important line who has won Westminster etc. etc. ..... such a sad decision to lump all breeders into one pile and it will have detrimental effects on breeds longterm). We do plan to spay these girls, and this was their last litter, but we don't like to lose too much blood with 2 surgeries, especially when they have so much to do taking care of pups etc., PLUS, well, not all vets understand anesthesia with brachy breeds like our vets do. It was the safest choice given the timing. Risking losing our girls is not an option. They truly are our children. So. Our gut and rationalization paid off this time.
May 16 - Early this morning we took Annie into the vet to get a reverse progesterone test. If it's low enough (under 2) then we will proceed with the scheduled c-section around 11 today. We always get so nervous around this time. So many unknown variables. Both girls are doing well though, even though they are stuffed. No one is showing any signs of "nesting" yet, so it will be interesting to see what the progesterone results are. We also have a scheduled c-section for tomorrow (possibly for Lilibeth). Here is Lilibeth staring at the food ... trying to decide if it's worth the effort lolz.
May 15 - So today, I sacrificed my sirloin steak I was going to cook for myself. Couldn't get Annie and Lilibeth to eat anything so I fried it up for them and then, (of course), cut it into small bites and hand fed them. Sigh. They also were willing to eat a little scrambled eggs. Not willing to pay $14 for every meal lolz, Jeff went to Walmart tonight to get some cheaper beef which they also loved. Insert eye roll.
But they are so stuffed and miserable now, I'm willing to give them whatever they are willing to eat! Here is Lilibeth enjoying some sunshine.

May 13 - Radiograph today! Most likely 3 pups.

April 27 and she is definitely starting to show. We keep resorting to finding new foods each day to feed her .... one day it was Mutton, another chicken backs, another just Pawtree treats, another she'd only eat lamb hearts. We try to limit certain organ meats now and avoid Liver and other foods like Mackerel that are high in vitamin A. We've been making special cookies and such trying to stimulate her appetite. While Annie loves them (she loves anything really ... pure pug lolz) Lilibeth turns her nose up. So, we try again until we find her favorite. Tonight, we'll try baked chicken with sweet potatoes since she liked that earlier in the week. Who knows, but we'll keep on until we find what strikes her fancy for any given day. Pregnant bitches that are maintained on diets deficient in carbohydrate may develop hypoglycemia in the last two weeks of gestation. This resulted in a significant increase in stillborn puppies and in neonatal death in the first three days of life. Occasionally, bitches have poor appetites throughout pregnancy. During the last half of pregnancy, energy requirements increase, as does the need for protein and carbohydrates. This is usually provided by the increased intake of a feed for growth, pregnancy and lactation. Too rapid alteration of diet may lead to gastrointestinal distress. The amount of food required by a pregnant bitch in later gestation increases in proportion with litter size and growth. A 40 percent average increase in food consumption accompanies the 20-55 percent increase in body weight. Because of increased intra-abdominal pressure from the enlarging uterus, multiple small meals are easier for the bitch to consume.
We are finishing "fancying-up" the nursery today and tomorrow. All during the past 2 months we have been gradually restocking supplies (baby wipes, oral cal, replacing heating pads etc.)
Yesterday, we wormed Lilibeth which will help avoid her passing parasites onto the litter.
Here are some things we will be looking out for on certain dates during the next couple of weeks:
May 1, 2024: On the 45th day of pregnancy coat and skeleton start to form.
May 5, 2024: On the 49th day of pregnancy we will prepare the whelping box.
May 6, 2024: On the 50th day of pregnancy we may spot puppy movement in the belly.
May 7, 2024: Today is the day we will start cooking up batches of liver water to freeze in ice cube trays (which you can use in formula if tube feeding is needed), and mama's pudding etc.
May 13, 2024: Day 57, and approximately 1 week before, we should notice Lilibeth's waist trim as the puppies move into position for bitch canal. This indicates that birth is approximately 7 days away. At this time we will plug in the adaptil diffuser (with calming pheremones) and add the adaptil collar, and we will start taking her temperature several times throughout the day. It's important that she stay hydrated so we will keep the doggie water fountain going with plenty of fresh water.

April 26, 2024: On the 40th day of pregnancy claws take shape.
April 21, 204: On the 35th day of pregnancy toes become visible. We are trying to increase her food. We will gradually decrease her exercise and increase her food intake. The biggest goals until May whelp date concern Lilibeth's diet (which is a challenge because she is very finicky). We make charcuterie boards with at least 5 choices of foods for her to choose from. Sometimes that doesn't even work, so we have to hand feed her (think feeding a baby ... "here comes the choo choo" sigh). We also make sure to keep her separate from any other pugs who will cause stress (or any situation) because significant mental or physical stress on the bitch can cause adrenaline secretion that decreases blood flow to the uterus and placenta resulting in decreased fetal oxygen and can impair development and threaten survival of the pups.
April 18, 2024: On the 32nd day of pregnancy the embryo takes shape with the eyelids taking on a distinctive shape.
April 15, 2024: Lilibeth had an ultrasound at Hope Animal Hospital this morning and the Veterinarian, Dr. Fuller, said that it looked like at least 3-4 puppies!
April 15, 2024: What better day to do an ultrasound than on Tax day? lolz. We will head with both Lilibeth and Annie to Hope Animal Clinic for an ultrasound to see if there are puppies and, if so, if they are doing well.
March 19, 2024: Jeff took Lilibeth to our amazing vet for the AI (using the chilled shipped semen) and, since progesterone levels were so high, it was just the one AI. We are now crossing fingers and toes that it took!
March 18, 2024: Progesterone testing took awhile (so expensive!) but Lilibeth finally decided it was time and her numbers climbed (soared rapidly!) on a Sunday no less. Maverick's co-breeder, despite a tragic loss in the pug world (the sudden and unexpected death of Pam Donaldson of Kendoric Pugs, her best friend and mentor), still managed somehow to collect Maverick and ship the 'goods' from New Hampshire to Alabama. Thank you, Kathie!
